Job Description

To provide regional leadership and technical oversight for all operational, maintenance, and client support activities across the Northern Cape (with concentration in the Kuruman/Kathu mining belt) and Namibia.

The incumbent will be strategically positioned within the region to ensure proximity to the bulk of the operating fleet and key mining clients, enabling rapid technical response, enhanced client engagement, and improved operational efficiency.

The role is accountable for technical capability on site, workforce supervision, parts and repairs coordination, and overall regional service performance.

Key Responsibilities

1. Regional Technical Leadership

  • Oversee all technical activities related to maintenance, breakdowns, field services, and repairs.
  • Ensure optimal fleet uptime and technical performance across sites.
  • Provide hands-on technical support for complex diagnostics and escalated issues.
  • Drive preventative maintenance compliance and service schedules.
  • Standardise technical procedures across Northern Cape and Namibia operations.

 

2. People Management & Skills Development

  • Manage and develop site-based technicians and technical supervisors.
  • Ensure correct skills allocation across sites.
  • Conduct performance management, technical assessments, and training planning.
  • Build a sustainable technical pipeline within the region.
  • Promote a strong safety and compliance culture aligned to mining regulations.

 

3. Client Relationship & Service Delivery

  • Act as primary regional technical liaison for key clients.
  • Conduct regular site visits and performance reviews.
  • Address client escalations relating to service quality, downtime, or repairs.
  • Identify service expansion and additional fleet support opportunities.
  • Strengthen presence near the Namibia border to support cross-border clients.

 

4. Parts, Repairs & Administrative Oversight

  • Supervise regional administrators supporting parts procurement and repair coordination.
  • Ensure effective job card management and cost control.
  • Oversee warranty claims, repair authorisations, and supplier performance.
  • Monitor parts availability to minimise downtime.
  • Ensure accurate reporting and documentation for all regional operations.

 

 

 

5. Operational & Financial Accountability

  • Manage regional operational budgets.
  • Control repair and maintenance costs.
  • Monitor technician productivity and utilisation rates.
  • Provide monthly reporting on fleet performance, downtime metrics, and regional KPIs.
  • Support forecasting for parts demand and manpower planning.

 

6. Compliance & Safety

  • Ensure full compliance with South African mining legislation and Namibian site requirements.
  • Oversee safety audits and toolbox talks.
  • Maintain adherence to OEM technical standards and internal SOPs.

 

Minimum Requirements

  • Trade Qualification (e.g., Diesel Mechanic / Earthmoving Equipment Mechanic / Fitter)
  • 8–10 years’ post-trade experience in mining or heavy equipment environment
  • Minimum 3–5 years’ supervisory or management experience
  • Strong technical knowledge of fleet maintenance and mining equipment
  • Valid driver’s licence
  • Willingness to travel extensively within the Northern Cape region and into Namibia
  • National Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Management
  • Experience managing cross-border operations
  • Strong commercial acumen
